Kyle Dixon’s Main Event Review: 25th March 2014

Date: 25th March 2014

Event: Main Event

Location: TD Bank North Garden, Boston, Massachusetts

Announcers: Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton

Written by Kyle Dixon (@kyledixon95)

We get our usual Main Event opening video and the announcers introduce us to the show. Big E comes out to a decent pop with the WWE Intercontinental Championship around his waist. Phillips tells us the breaking news reported on WWE.com earlier today that Christian is unable to compete tonight thanks to a slight concussion. He won a Fatal-4 Way on RAW to earn a title match against Big E tonight so now the three other competitors will have a triple threat match. The winner gets the title match later tonight.

Sheamus makes his entrance first to a good pop and Big E is sitting at ringside for this triple threat. Alberto Del Rio is the second man out and is the heel here. Dolph Ziggler completes the trio and gets a good reaction from the Boston crowd.

Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Number One Contender’s Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

The winner gets the title match against Big E later tonight. Sheamus and Ziggler team up on Del Rio first and then slug it out. Sheamus hits a stiff back elbow but gets nailed by Del Rio’s kicks. He throws Ziggler outside but gets run over by a Sheamus clothesline. The Irishman hits a jumping knee for a one count and hits a rolling senton that gets a near fall. Del Rio escapes out of the ring and it leaves Sheamus and Ziggler. Ziggler gets overpowered with a shoulder block and a big elbow puts Sheamus in control. Dolph hits a big dropkick for a one count but a powerful clothesline takes him down. Del Rio is knocked off the apron but Ziggler uses the distraction to roll Sheamus up for a near fall. Sheamus hits a bodyslam and a standing elbow drop gets a two count. Sheamus dodges a famouser attempt and Del Rio hits him with an enziguri from behind. He launches Ziggler into the barricade as we head to commercial.

Commercial.

We come back with Del Rio nailing a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Ziggler for a near fall. The heel is in full control with Sheamus hurt on the outside. He climbs to the top rope but Ziggler counters the high-flying move with a dropkick to the chin. Dolph hits a flying clothesline and a neckbreaker on Del Rio for a near fall. Del Rio misses a double foot-stomp but Sheamus drags Ziggler out of the ring. He beats on Del Rio before hitting Ziggler with an Irish Curse backbreaker. Del Rio gets one too for a very close near fall. Sheamus calls for the Brogue Kick but Ziggler comes in to nail a big dropkick. Del Rio hits him with a foot stomp and Sheamus is on the top rope. Del Rio hits Ziggler with a German suplex for a two count and Sheamus hits a battering ram from the top for a near fall. Del Rio went for the Cross Arm Breaker but Sheamus counters with a clothesline to the outside. Ziggler hits a huge DDT from behind for a very close two count. Sheamus went for White Noise but Ziggler scrambled out with a roll-up attempt. Sheamus reversed into a Cloverleaf submission and Del Rio nails a superkick to the back of the head for a two count. Ziggler hits a famouser on Del Rio but Alberto kicked out at two. Ziggler went for a Zig-Zag but Del Rio blocked and Dolph walked into a big Brogue Kick. Sheamus went to cover but Ziggler fell out of the ring to his dismay. Del Rio rolls him up for a two count and Sheamus hits White Noise but only gets a two count. Sheamus went for a Cloverleaf on Del Rio but he counters with an armbreaker. He locks in the Cross Arm Breaker but Sheamus powers out. He misses a Brogue and Del Rio sets up a backstabber. Ziggler comes in from behind to hit Del Rio with a Zig-Zag at the same time as the backstabber. Ziggler covered Del Rio for the win.

Winner by pinfall and NEW Number One Contender to the WWE Intercontinental Championship: Dolph Ziggler

After the match, Ziggler sold the win with a wild celebration and Big E came in the ring. Renee joined them and we have an interview segment. Ziggler says he is going to Wrestlemania and will win the Andre the Giant Battle Royal as the WWE Intercontinental Champion. He says he taught Big E nearly everything he knows and puts over the champion. Big E says he was there at ringside when Dolph became World Heavyweight Champion and wishes Ziggler good luck. They shake hands to end the segment.

Match Rating: ***1/2

Match Analysis: That was a good triple-threat match that stuck to the tried and tested formula. You had long periods of one guy out of the ring and then it ended with all three hitting big moves. There was a genuine feel of mystery over who would win and they built the near falls really well. Ziggler rolling out of the ring from the Brogue was great and the finish was a nice idea. It didn’t quite work as well in practice but it’s a hard sequence to pull off so I can look past that. Ziggler was probably the better choice to win as he has a bit of a history with Big E but they never got a big match so this works.

The RAW Rebound was Randy Orton and Batista trying to convince Stephanie McMahon to talk Triple H out of the title match at Wrestlemania. Steph slapped Batista who speared Orton and held the belts high. On Smackdown. Batista will be there and is expected to address the WWE Universe.

Up next, there is a ten-diva tag team match in a preview of the Vickie Guerrero Invitational at Wrestlemania. It’s Natalya, Naomi, Cameron, Emma and Eva Marie against Alicia Fox, Aksana, Summer Rae, Layla and Tamina Snuka.

Commercial.

The WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee is joining commentary for the next match. Natalya’s team come out to her entrance music to save time. AJ complains about the Wrestlemania match as you would expect. The heel team come out to Summer Rae’s music which is kind of weird when you think about it. AJ says she and Tamina are friends and she is on AJ’s side in the match.

Natalya, Cameron, Naomi, Emma and Eva Marie vs. Alicia Fox, Aksana, Summer Rae, Layla and Tamina Snuka

It’s Layla and Natalya who start and Nattie nails a couple of clothesline. She hits a snap suplex for a near fall and trash talks Summer. I think they are having problem on Total Divas. Emma tags in and rolls Layla up for a near fall. She dodges a corner splash and lcoks in Dilemma. Alicia tags in and here comes Eva to a lot of boos. She hits a couple of sloppy takedowns but gets stick in the heel corner. She fights out and we have a mass brawl with everyone involved. We restore order with Fox working on Eva’s arm. A Northern Lights suplex gets a two count and Eva is isolated in the heel corner. Alicia misses a spinning leg drop and Naomi gets the hot tag. She delivers a headscissors to Tamina and there is a corner splash. Naomi hits a crossbody from the top rope for a near fall. It breaks down and Emma tries to make Eva dance. Tamina hits a double clothesline and hits Naomi with a superkick for the win.

Winners by pinfall: Alicia Fox, Aksana, Summer Rae, Layla and Tamina Snuka

After the match, AJ comes in the ring to raise Tamina’s hand and hugs Snuka. Tamina does not look pleased.

Match Rating: *1/2

Match Analysis: This wasn’t that bad. It was sloppy at times and the idea of Eva as the babyface in peril is a bit silly. Tamina getting the win and being built as AJ’s biggest threat makes sense and works. This could have been a lot worse so I will take it.

Commercial.

The second RAW Rebound shows the Wyatt Family playing mind games with John Cena. Cena was about to beat Luke Harper but got attacked by the Wyatts. The image of Cena stuck in a sheep mask is a good one. It was certainly memorable for sure.

Bad News Barrett is raising on the podium. He has some bad news for the Boston crowd and talks trash about the fans.

Commercial.

Big E is just finishing up his entrance as we come back. Ziggler comes out to a decent reaction and these two used to be tag partners. Big E came onto the main roster as Ziggler’s heavy early last year. These are both babyfaces. They get big match introductions which is a nice touch.

Big E (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

The champion hits a big clothesline to start and powers Ziggler with a takedown. He is slowing the pace down and using his size difference which makes a lot of sense. Ziggler nails a dropkick but Bug E gets to the ropes before a pin. Ziggler is clotheslined to the outside as we head to commercial.

Commercial.

We come back with Big E going shoulder first into the ring post. Ziggler hits a flying crossbody and a big corner splash. The neckbreaker only gets a one count and Ziggler misses a famouser. Big E hits a couple of clotheslines and a big belly-to-belly suplex. He goes for a running splash but gets caught with a running dropkick. Ziggler hits the big DDT for a near fall. Big E shrugs off a Zig-Zag attempt and hits a massive lariat for a two count. The straps come down but Ziggler counters the Big Ending with a famouser for a near fall. Ziggler goes for a superkick but Big E counters with a back drop. He hits the Big Ending to retain his title.

Winner by pinfall and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion: Big E

After the match, they shake hands and hug it out to a good cheer. Ziggler raises Big E’s hand to end the show.

Match Rating: **1/2

Match Analysis: This was good but never reached the same level as the opening match. They failed to create too much tension and you never felt like Big E was in danger. Still, there was some nice counters in this and Big E getting a win over a big name puts over his title reign. Pretty good stuff.

Show Rating: 7.5/10

Show Analysis: This is a good show and it mainly revolves around the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The triple threat was a great match while the title match was entertaining enough. The tag match wasn’t as bad as I feared so you have to call this episode a success.

Kyle Dixon’s WWE Main Event Review: 26th January 2016

Date: 26th January 2016

Event: Main Event

Location: Amalie Arena, Tampa, Florida

Announcers: Rich Brennan and Jerry Lawler

Written by Kyle Dixon (@kyledixon95)

After our usual opening video, we cut to the crowd here in Florida before Kevin Owens makes his way to the ring for the opening match. He has one of the most surreal entrance music on the current roster. It has a big star feel to it. His opponent tonight gets a pop as Jack Swagger comes out to the ring. That’s the third Main Event in a row where Swagger has wrestled. C show push!

Kevin Owens vs. Jack Swagger

Swagger goes straight for the Patriot Lock but Owens dodges it into the ropes. The heel has a bandage on his arm, which is selling the damage down by the Last Man Standing match with Dean Ambrose on Sunday at the Royal Rumble. He beats on Swagger with shoulder blocks to the ribs and talks trash to the crowd throughout. Swagger comes back with as chop to the knee and a big back suplex for a two count. Owens gets control with a right hand and mocks Swagger’s “We the people” chant by replacing the word people with idiots. A running senton gets two as Lawler laughs at Owens’ trashtalking.

Commercial.

We come back and Owens has Swagger stuck with elbows to the face. During the resthold, Owens sings the Canadian national anthem which is a very nice touch. Swagger comes back with a kick to the face and a few clotheslines. He goes for the Swagger Bomb but Owens rolls out of the ring. Swagger meets him out there with a huge clothesline and in the ring, he goes for another Swagger Bomb. This one hits but Owens gets a shoulder up at two. Swagger goes for a splash but Owens drops him to the outside and he goes face-first off the ring steps. The heel takes advantage by dragging Swagger back in the ring and performing a vicious cannonball for a near fall. Owens calls for the end but Swagger counters the Pop-Up Powerbomb into the Patriot Lock. Owens powers out of it and goes for a suplex, but Swagger counters into a German suplex of his own. The Real American goes for another Swagger Bomb but Owens counters with a kick to the face. He hits his own German suplex and a superkick gets a very close near fall. Owens goes for the Pop-Up Powerbomb again, but once again, Swagger counters as he rolls him up for a two count. He goes for a shoulder block in the corner, but Owens moves and Swagger goes straight into the ring post. Owens does finally hit the Pop-Up Powerbomb for the victory.

Winner by pinfall: Kevin Owens

Match Rating: ***

Match Analysis: This was a good match that just about scraped the three star barrier. It’s a notch below the match between Dolph Ziggler and The Miz on Superstars last week that I also gave three stars to. Still, this had enough to warrant the rating as they packed a very good match into the time they had. What Swagger and Owens did really well here is put over how final the Pop-Up Powerbomb can be. They did a super job of building to the move and making you feel that if Owens hits it, the match is over. That will come in handy in the bigger matches for Owens as anybody who kicks out of it is made to look great thanks to matches on the smaller shows like this. This match is another testament to the idea that superstars put on these unimportant shows should make the most of the time they have. Owens did that here by building up his finisher, and Swagger continues to prove how good of an in-ring talent he is each week.

Commercial.

Here comes the Dudley Boyz who are in tag team action next. They will face The Ascension who are already in the ring. That does not bode well.

The Dudley Boyz (D-Von and Bubba Ray) vs. The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor)

The heels attack early as the referee gets control of the match. It’s D-Von in there with Viktor. Bubba tags in and runs riot with a splash and a clothesline for Konnor. He hits Viktor with the Bionic Elbow while talking a lot of trash. He hits a bodyslam and sets up D-Von for the diving headbutt. However, Konnor attacks D-Von who was perched on the top rope. Viktor hits Bubba with an STO for a two count. Konnor is in there and he beats away on Bubba with a strong Irish whip. Vikto comes back in but gets hits with a backbreaker and here’s the hot tag to D-Von. He gets a few shoulder tackles and a nice neckbreaker. A massive lariat clothesline gets a near fall and Bubba tags in for a 3-D and the win.

Winners by pinfall: The Dudley Boyz (D-Von and Bubba Ray)

Match Rating: *

Match Analysis: This wasn’t bad, but it didn’t blow me away either. It was solid enough and the work involved wasn’t terrible. I just didn’t get invested in this.

Jojo is backstage with Rusev and Lana. She asks how the powerbomb from RAW will affect him but Lana says nothing effects a super athlete. Rusev says he will destroy Ryback tonight. Lana tells him to crush.

Commercial.

It’s RAW Rewind time with Triple H’s celebration of winning the Royal Rumble and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. It’s Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns at Fast Lane and the winner faces Triple H at Wrestlemania for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Here comes Rusev for the main event of this week’s Main Event. As he is in singles action and not involved with the League of Nations tonight, Lana is with him at ringside.

Commercial.

We come back and Ryback makes his entrance to a decent amount of noise.

Rusev (w/ Lana) vs. Ryback

It’s a test of strength to start with neither man coming out on top. Ryback builds up steam and hits a nice crossbody. He performs a Thesz Press and a big splash gets a near fall. He calls for his finisher, but Rusev rolls to the outside. Ryback tries to attack him on the outside but Rusev nails a superkick. He throws Ryback into the steel steps as we head for a break.

Commercial.

We come back with Rusev working on Ryback’s shoulder. He hits a big back body drop and a running splash gets two. Rusev goes for a suplex over the ropes to the outside but Ryback blocks it and suplexes him back in the ring. Ryback hits a high knee and a missile dropkick from the top rope for a near fall. He goes for a powerbomb but Rusev reverses into a back drop. He hits a running crossbody for a near fall. Ryback goes for ShellShock but it is blocked so he turns it into a neckbreaker and gets a two count. He goes for a Meathook Clothesline but gets hit with a superkick. Ryback nails the clothesline anyway for a near fall. They start trading punches and Ryback goes for ShellShock. Lana is on the apron and Rusev pushes Ryback in her direction. He avoids the collision but Lana slaps him around the face anyway. The referee gives nothing for it and Rusev rolls him up for a near fall. Rusev goes for a superkick but Ryback blocks it and nails a superkick of his own. He goes for the Shell Shock but Rusev escapes again. He nails Ryback with a superkick and locks in the Accolade. Ryback passes out and the referee calls for the submission.

Winner by submission: Rusev

Match Rating: **1/2

Match Analysis: There was some very good stuff here as they went all out to have a big match. They traded a lot of counters and had a good hoss battle. The only thing that lets it down is how slow it was to start and some stupid officiating. Lana slaps Ryback in full view of the referee yet there was no DQ given. I like the clean finish, but that seemed like someone messed up there. Still, very solid match between two good big men.

Show Rating: 7/10

Show Analysis: This was a good show in my eyes. You had two good matches at the top and tail of the show while the filler wasn’t anything bad. You can’t ask for much more on a show that the company doesn’t care about.
